The symposium was held to commemorate John Harrison's birth 300 years before, and is the best contribution to understanding Harrison and time keeping at sea since Quill's book, John Harrison, the Man who found Longitude, was published in 1966. [Antiquorum]: The Longitude at the Eve of the Third Millenium
O/P. A sale of important precision timekeepers - marine chronometers, regulators, watches - and documents relating to the discovery of the longitude. 75 lots all illustrated in colour, the most important being an 8-day marine timekeeper by Henry Sully - probably the third he made and one of only two known to have survived. This item, called Pendule à Levier by Sully, was made in 1724 and is extensively described and illustrated. Other items in the sale included an exceptional chronometer wristwatch by F.P. Journe, a pocket watch by George Daniels, several marine chronometers by Breguet and the first lever watch made by Joseph Emery. Hardback catalogue, very good condition. An excellent book, the result of many years of detailed research and of great use to clock enthusiasts for its chapters on the chronometer makers Alexander Dobbie, Duncan McGregor, Kelvin White, and Whyte Thomson & Co. Barometer collectors will want this book for its information about Alexander Adie and his successors including English branches of the business. Sundial enthusiasts are not forgotten, there is a chapter on Richard Melville and his slate sundials. The book's illustrations are of instruments in the Museum's Arthur Frank Collection, and this copy of the book has a presentation inscription signed by Arthur Frank on the title page. This is a facsimile reprint of Earnshaw's appeal to the Board of Longitude for a reward for his inventions, first published in 1808, with a new introduction by John Griffiths. O/P. 177 pages, 21 plates, 1968. An excellent book about the Barraud business with a useful listing of known chronometers, clocks, watches and their serial numbers, very useful when trying to date other examples. Complete with the supplement published in 1979, making a total of 283 pages and 33 plates. Barraud's are one of the most respected 19th century chronometer makers so this book is essential reading for enthusiasts. The book is in very good condition as is the supplement.
