The earliest clockmaker in the town was Mann Beckett who married there on Saint Valentine's Day 1719/20. Smith (B.): Clockmakers & Watchmakers of Stow on the Wold
NEW. 184 pages, 95 illustrations, 2024. A well researched new book, by Barnaby Smith, who has collected information about the Stow (Gloucestershire) clockmakers (especially the Archer family) for well over 30 years. Walter Archer was working in Stow by 1699 and his descendants continued in Stow until 1824. Other Stow makers worked from 1719 up to about 1939, the practitioners from the mid 19th century onwards being retailers/repairers not 'makers'. The book includes an appendix with details of (6 miles away) Moreton in Marsh clockmakers from the 1690's to the early 20th century. (Ref: N5238)

O/P. 436 pages, 25 illus., reprint of 2nd edition, 1975. A good book and, for many years, the only source for a list of Scottish clockmakers. Still useful to have as some information about the makers is not contained in the more recent book by Whyte. A good copy, the dust jacket good but faded as usual. (Ref: K856 - R1)

O/P. 290 pages, illustrated, 2nd edition, 2008. A brief history of the origins of Smiths Industries and their domestic clock making activities which started in 1931 and ceased in 1979. Smiths owned several companies and trademarks so Smiths English Clocks Ltd, the Enfield Clock Company, 'Astral' and 'Empire' are just a few of the names mentioned. The book also contains a picture gallery of over 2150 different clocks and timers produced by Smiths. A lot of clocks, but they were England's largest manufacturer of clocks at the time! Streeter, the Victorian retailer of jewellery, watches, clocks, and silverware. 35 pages are about pocket watches, carriage clocks, French table clocks, clock garnitures and marble clocks. The original edition is so much nicer than the reprint, and the photographs are sharper. A good copy, cloth a bit worn, one bruised corner, edge of page block a little stained, dust jacket worn.
