O/P. 193 pages, 5 plates (1 folding), 6th edition, Brussels 1836. The title translates as How to manage and regulate Clocks and Watches for those who have no knowledge of horology. This was probably the first owners' manual for watch and clock owners and provides an insight into looking after domestic clocks in the 18th century. A very good copy, the pages (size 14 x 9.5 cm) generally clean and bright, the plates a little browned, minor foxing to end papers, in 19th century quarter-leather binding with gilt lettering and tooling to spine, with marbled boards and end papers. O/P. [ 8 ] pp, 192 pages, 1 page errata, 16 engraved plates, [ 14 ] page index, published by author, 1st and only edition, 1766. Page size 10 x 8 inches. Alexander Cumming was a well-respected 18th century watchmaker. The first essay - An Essay Towards the Improvement of Clock-work - deals with pendulum design including temperature compensation, the use of oil and the design of recoil and deadbeat escapements. The second essay - An Essay Towards the Improvement of Watch-work - deals with the design of watch main springs, balances and balance springs. A very good copy, first two pages slightly foxed, other pages in very clean condition, the plates in even better condition. Full leather binding, re-bound many years ago with new spine (which has blind tooling and a red lettering piece), the boards with the original leather covering laid down.

A complete copy of this famous work, the pages and plates now very lightly browned with age. Re-backed many years ago using very dark grey leather and the original brown leather covered boards. Leather to all edges chipped and worn, the leather somewhat marked in places. Overall a very good, and complete, example of the third edition.

xvi, 400 pages, 18 engraved folding plates, page size 20 x 12 cm, first edition, London 1773. This is a good copy of a well-known work by a London watchmaker, in full leather binding, re-backed using original boards and later gilt tooled spine.

Most of the book is lessons in arithmetic and geometry but there are chapters on pendulums and the drawing of watch calibres, plus an appendix of practical tips for those working at the bench.
