Time in Rutland is a detailed account of the devices for the measurement of time, from simple sundials to complex clocks, and of the signalling of time by the ringing of bells, for the whole of the county. The descriptions of the clocks, dials and bells in the Gazeteer form a comprehensive statement of what is known today. They supersede the only other such account, that of Rutland's church bells and bellringing customs by Thomas North published in 1880. Time in Rutland covers a wider brief, including everything to do with the measuring of time. It sets out information about the clockmakers and bellfounders whose work survives in Rutland, and still includes many quotations from primary archive sources which help to document and authenticate the history of the bells and clocks described.
